Strong Winter for Winsor Athletes

The winter of 2011-2012 proved another memorable season for Wildcat athletes. Below are brief varsity highlights. Watch for news of individual all-league honors after the winter sports ceremony on March 6, 2012.

Varsity Basketball
Varsity basketball had one of its best seasons in recent years, climbing five spots in the Eastern Independent League standings to take fourth place. The team rebounded from an opening loss with three straight wins against Concord, LCA, and Portsmouth Abbey. At the Stoneleigh Burnham Holiday Tournament, Winsor came home with a best-ever third place finish. In the new year, the team proved itself again with a four-game win streak, beating Pingree, Concord, Bancroft and Dana Hall. In the final regular season game, with a spot in the tournament “A pool” at stake, the Wildcats avenged a season-opening loss, dominating NCDS on their own court. The team relied on tenacious defense—and the leadership of senior captains Erin Cohee, Elise Green and Emily Morton.

Led by senior captains Erika D’Andrea and Maddie Sovie, this hard-working team never gave up and pushed themselves everyday to be better. Highlights include an 8-0 win over Beaver Country Day. Tight contests proved the team’s resilience, from an overtime 3-4 loss to Newton Country Day School to a 1-1 tie with Portsmouth Abbey.

Varsity Squash
After last year’s record-breaking season, varsity squash proved nearly unstoppable in its own record-breaking march to a third straight EIL title and a 15-2 overall record. To crown the season, the Wildcats took first at the New England Championships, with three Winsor girls winning their divisions. In the EIL, Winsor went undefeated and emerged as a clear powerhouse in the league. At the nationals, winning the Division 3 title last year meant a move up to Division 2 and competing with famous schools in the squash community. The Wildcats took sixth place in their new division, ranking Winsor 22nd in the nation out of more than 60 teams. Veteran senior captains Abigail Giannuzzi and Catherine Walsh led the way in this banner year.

In league competition, Winsor’s only losses came against Dana Hall, both in very competitive meets. At the league championships, Winsor swimmers took second place. The Wildcats rose to the occasion with 20 personal best times, including bests by all three Winsor relay teams. Fourteen Winsor swimmers qualified for Division 2 New England Championships, and are racing at Westminster School on March 3.
