Congratulations to Jordan Hamelsky '20 and Rebecca Skoler '20. The two Winsor sophmores represented the United States at the 20th World Maccabiah Games this summer, competing on the Maccabi USA Girls Juniors Golf Team that proudly took home the silver medal. The girls were among more than 1,100 athletes on the Maccabi USA Team, competing alongside 10,000 Jewish athletes from 76 countries, participating in 43 different sports.
The games, "a celebration of Jewish strength and solidarity," were held July 4-18 in Israel, and Team USA turned in a strong performance, winning a total of 365 medals. With the goal of "Building Pride Through Sports," the measure of success at the games is as much about the impact of the experience on the athletes' lives and the friendships made as it is about medals won.
"It is hard to describe what it's like walking into a stadium with over 50,000 people from all over the world. The pride I felt while wearing red white and blue was unexplainable," recalls Rebecca. "But what was most memorable were all the incredible athletes I met and how close I became with my teammates. And having the opportunity to learn more about the Israeli culture and how proud they are to be Jewish was eye opening."
"I will keep the friendships I made forever and I will never forget the amazing experience of representing the U.S.," adds Jordan. "It was incredible seeing all different countries coming together to celebrate our religion while also competing in sports we love to play."
