Principles of Diversity
THE PRINCIPLES SET FORTH BELOW define Winsor’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and a global consciousness. The school affirms, teaches, and values:
- belief in the dignity and humanity of every person and a commitment to understanding individual and group differences
- respect for oneself and for one another and responsibility for oneself and for community
- generosity of spirit, thinking beyond one’s immediate self-interest and sharing talents freely with others
- openness to new ideas and rejection of stereotypical thinking
- honesty, kindness, integrity, courage, humor
- empathic understanding
Winsor is committed to recognizing the importance of communication and to encouraging dialogue among all constituencies; to promoting intellectual and social growth and development within the school community; to providing a safe, supportive setting so that students have the opportunity to explore and to clarify their own beliefs and values, to take risks, and to think and speak for themselves; and to recognizing and responding to individual and institutional prejudices, both overt and subtle, based on gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, and physical and mental ability.
To teach these values, which flow from THE MISSION OF THE WINSOR SCHOOL – developing “competent, responsible, generous-minded women” – the school is:
- striving to consciously create an environment of respect and inclusion through a wide array of diversity efforts and programs;
- building a more inclusive curriculum;
- developing the knowledge and methods to address a range of learning styles;
- striving for ethnic, racial, religious, and socio-economic diversity among all the constituencies of the School; and
- offering a variety of ways of participating in the wider community.
Aware of its ever-growing consciousness and understanding of the complexity of diversity issues, the Winsor School acknowledges a continuing need to evaluate and revise its diversity efforts. This process is critical to maintaining an academic and social environment where all students can develop confidence, values, knowledge, and life skills they need to thrive within Winsor and in the global community.
