Teaching and Learning
Ask students what makes the school special, and their teachers are always high on the list.
Ask faculty the same question, and they'll typically say it's the girls. Winsor engenders a wonderful mutual respect between faculty and students. Girls feel clearly valued.
"Teachers take kids seriously," as one girl phrased it. "The fact that teachers are so dedicated makes you feel special," another girl explains. "I'm not sure I'll find teachers like Winsor's anywhere else," a classmate adds.
The academically motivated and promising girls who come to Winsor find here a community of teachers who themselves are exceptionally motivated scholars with a boundless curiosity for learning.
Winsor teachers are bright, creative, and caring individuals who know their subjects intimately. Three-quarters have one or more advanced degrees in their fields. More than 10 percent have doctoral degrees, including several science and mathematics faculty. As colleagues, they collaborate in creative ways, and together forge a rich community of scholars who find joy and passion in their work.
Further, they make their subjects come alive for students. They have extensive classroom experience. In every discipline, teachers share an understanding that girls learn best when they listen actively, think critically, and voice their own ideas. Girls also come to see how real learning takes courage, resilence, and often collaboration.
Moreover, faculty care deeply about their students not only as learners but also as people. In both visible and subtler ways, they are role models for girls. They work with girls as advisors. Many also lead clubs and activities tied to their own passions, from community service to engineering and computers.
Every day at Winsor, teachers engender in girls a love of knowledge and thoughtful discussion. "When girls wind up loving what they do in school, it's more of a thrill to learn," suggests a parent with three daughters now at Winsor.
