The Science Department is leading a hands-on science experience for Upper School students at the world-renowned Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, MA for the first week of spring break 2019. Winsor students will have the opportunity to collaborate with students from other Independent Schools who will also be participating in this program. Students will spend a week learning from MBL investigators about current research topics in science through an immersive, hands-on experience where they will learn techniques related to embryology, gene editing, microscopy, and biodiversity with applications in a variety of areas of study including genetics, developmental biology, behavior, and evolution. A variety of animal models will be studied, of which many will be collected locally from the marine environment. The plan is for students to rotate through different modules designed to engage students with hands-on activities that will use cutting-edge techniques both in the laboratory and in the field.
The trip is open to all Upper School students. The minimum number of students required to offer this program is 10 with a limit of 30. The current estimated price of this trip is $2,650. This price includes tuition, accommodation, all meals, and transportation to and from Woods Hole.
