Students Shine at the Spring Concert

Thursday, April 28—During all-school Assembly, the Performing Arts Department presented Winsor's annual spring concert featuring Lower School and Upper School musicians and singers. The musical performances, which took place in the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Theater, were an inspiring showcase of musical talent and collaboration.

The Lower School Orchestra (Classes I-IV) played selections from Peer Gynt, written by Edvard Grieg and arranged by Richard Meyer. The students, Logan Charner-Laird ’28 and Eileen Lee ’28 (both violinists) shared, “please remember the ending is not always what it seems.”

In between each performance, Class III Stagecraft and Class IV Tech Theater transformed the stage, moving chairs and music stands to make way for risers and even a baby grand piano—all under the guidance of Performing Arts Faculty Andres Puigbo, who teaches the courses. This was all done to cheers and encouragement from the crowd of assembled students.

Next, accompanied and directed by Performing Arts Faculty Andrew Marshall on piano, the Lower School Chorus (Classes I-IV) sang “Are You Proud of Me?” by Mark Burrows.

A departure from their usual black dresses, Illumina (Classes VI, VII, and VIII) got in the spring concert spirit by wearing florals and the audience erupted in applause and excitement as they took the stage. Illumina sang four pieces. “I Write the Songs” written by Bruce Johnston and popularized by Barry Manilow featured soloists Alicia Wu ’24 and Anissa Patel ’23. Singing the next two pieces a capella, students listened for Mr. Marshall’s pitches on piano before launching into “Chromatic Fugue” by John Burge, a unique piece that did not feature words but different vowel sounds and syllables. Continuing with “Mosca y Mosquito,” a Spanish piece by Martin Rodriguez Peris, students shared the comical story of a fly and mosquito that want to marry each other. “We wish them a lifetime of happiness,” quipped Mr. Marshall. Ending with the popular gospel song “This Little Light,” arranged by Mr. Marshall, featuring soloist Anika Banerjee ’22, students in the audience clapped along to the beat. Mr. Marshall encouraged, “this song charges each of us to be our own unique selves.”

To end the fall concert, Senior Small sang "Talking to the Moon” by Bruno Mars and “This is Me” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul from The Greatest Showman. The seniors got the entire auditorium clapping. After holding hands to take a bow and receiving a standing ovation, Senior Small then clapped for Mr. Marshall, who had accompanied them on the piano. With the senior’s last day tomorrow, Friday, April 29, this was an especially poignant moment to conclude their final all-school Assembly.

A special thank you to Ms. Connor, Mr. Marshall, Mr. Puigbo, and the entire Performing Arts Department.
