Banner Reveal and Awards Celebration Build Excitement on Final Day

On June 6, 2017, the Winsor community enjoyed two traditional closing activities on the final day of school in the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Theater: the sophomore class reveal of the senior banner, and the All School Awards Celebration.

The sophomore class unveiled the banner that they made for the Class of 2017 in a fun and spirited reveal. The theme of the banner mirrored the seniors' homeroom theme of fairytales and the movie, "Shrek." The banner has an image of a fairytale castle, with lyrics from movie's theme song "All Star" by Smash Mouth: "You'll never know if you don't go/You'll never shine if you don't glow."

After the big reveal, students collected their yearbooks, hot off the presses, to flip through and reminisce with friends.

Later that afternoon, the entire school gathered in the Goel Theater to enjoy the All School Awards Celebration to honor the athletic, theatrical and academic accomplishments of Winsor students during the 2016-2017 academic year. Betsy Kelly, Lower School head, Kate Caspar, assistant head of school, Ridie Markenson, head of Upper School, and Sherren Granese, director of athletics, assisted Head of School Sarah Pelmas with the program and presentation of the prizes.

In her welcome to students, Ms. Pelmas noted that, "The prizes handed out today are of great importance not only for the winners, but for all students here. They represent something to aspire to, but also something to be proud of, collectively. Each winner carries with her the pride, good wishes, and enthusiasm of her classmates, teammates and peers."

Ms. Pelmas continued, "I hope you are all proud of what you've done this year. You've learned so much and achieved so much, and you've contributed so much to this wonderful community. Thank you for the risks that you took, the games you played, the work you produced, and the way you and your classmates came together as a learning community. All your lives, you will cherish the memories of what you have done here. As we close this school year, I just want to take a moment to congratulate and thank you all for a truly wonderful year."

Following the awarding of the prizes, Isabelle Bastian '17, vice president of the senior class, introduced David Griffin, English Faculty, who was chosen to speak by the Class of 2017. Mr. Griffin commended the seniors on the solidarity of their class, and urged them, in the years ahead, to "Go out and build in your communities the kind of solidarity you have forged here at Winsor" (read his full remarks here).
