Winsor Collaborates with 4 Area Schools on a Fundraiser

SOMOS, Winsor’s Latinx affinity group, is collaborating with four area schools—Newton Country Day, Dana Hall, Fontbonne Academy, and Roxbury Latin—to raise money for communities in Central America devastated by back-to-back hurricanes.

In November 2020, in a matter of two weeks, a Category 4 and a Category 5 hurricane made landfall in Central America resulting in torrential rains, flooding, landslides, and 150 mph winds. Crops and homes were decimated across communities in Panama, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala and Belize. Coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, an ongoing drought, poverty, and food insecurity, the situation is dire. “This is a humanitarian crisis that needs to be addressed,” says head of SOMOS Katherine Torres ’22.

In partnership with non-profit organization Food for the Poor, students are raising funds to assist with sustainable disaster relief that will generate food and stimulate the economy. SOMOS is selling custom designed T-Shirts and accepting additional donations. Money raised will support a seed planting projects with community farmers to replace what the hurricanes stripped away. Food for the Poor will provide training, tools, seeds to grow produce, and agricultural products that will generate food and revenue for farmers. In Nicaragua, Food For the Poor even buys back produce from coop farmers to distribute to the needy.
