Field Hockey Wins NEPSAC

November 22, 2021—The Winsor School’s varsity field hockey team defeated Newton Country Day School with a final score of 2-1 to win the Class C NEPSAC Championship. The team, led by Head Coach Erin Calamari and Assistant Coach Kathryn Scheerer, worked together and played with grit and determination on the Wildcats’ home turf.

"I am so proud of the way this incredibly special team gelled and performed together in this tournament! I could tell that the girls were dialed-in before our warm-up even started and I just knew that the energy would be in our favor,” said Coach Calamari. “The team dug deep, stuck to the game plan, and played with poise even during some stressful moments. Newton is a well-coached team, and we knew we had to play a near-perfect game to win. These girls are so deserving of this honor," she added.

Winsor (13-3-1) struck first just one minute in on a penalty corner, and then again in the third to make it a 2-1 game. Highlights included midfielder Julia Ryan ’22 connecting for the go-ahead score, and Winsor surviving a Newton Country Day penalty corner that finished as time expired.

On the winner, Ryan attacked Newton Country Day’s goal from the right side, making her way around several defenders before ripping an off-balanced shot that hit the back of the net as she fell. She also assisted on the first goal by Sophia Russell ’22. Newton Country Day scored its goal with 5:50 to go in the second on a penalty corner of their own from a Callie Joyce pass to Jane Bresnahan.

The team appreciated all of the fans that were at the game cheering the Wildcats on to victory.
