30 Plays in 60 Minutes

November 19, 2021—On Friday and Saturday night, the Performing Arts Department hosted the Upper School production of Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. It was the first staged performance in front of a live audience in the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Theater since fall 2019.

First performed in 1988, Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind was written by Greg Allen and is the longest running show in Chicago history. An ensemble experiment, the show is actually made up of 30 plays, each two minutes in length, and performed in 60 minutes. Each two-minute play is performed in a random order chosen by the audience while an on-stage 60-minute timer keeps everyone honest. 

 

Over several months, Upper School students collaborated on the performance, managing everything from the set design and creation, to costumes and sound, and even lighting.
