Winsor Food Bank Club Receives the "2023 Institutional Volunteer of the Year Award" at the Greater Boston Food Bank

Wednesday, May 17—Members of the Winsor Food Bank Club received the 2023 Institutional Volunteer of the Year Award for their commitment to service of the Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) at their annual fundraiser in Boston.

"These young women show up with smiles and tons of positive energy. The student volunteers and their teachers display a great sense of community and understand the importance of giving back to their community. They take pride in packing food boxes or sorting fresh produce that they know will go to the people who need it most,” wrote Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO of GBFB. "Your team’s enthusiastic volunteerism and positive energy show that your students really understand the meaning of giving back to the community. Winsor School students have shown they value the importance of accuracy, safety, and stewardship and will become future trailblazers in their communities. Thank you for all your support towards our mission!"

World Languages Faculty Ariel Tu, who teaches Upper School Mandarin Chinese, oversees the Winsor Food Bank Club and said they are all incredibly honored for the recognition they received.

“At Winsor, we have always been dedicated to giving back to society. Our students consistently volunteer at the GBFB on a monthly basis, where they actively participate in packing and sorting fresh food to alleviate food insecurity,” said Tu. “Additionally, each year, we organize fundraising events for the Hunger Free Campaign during the holiday season. The efforts and commitment displayed by our students have been truly remarkable. Moving forward, we will continue to do our part in supporting the mission of the food bank.”

Tu wanted to especially acknowledge Allison Chan ’23, Amory Gordon ’23, and Kathryn Swords ’23, for their senior leadership in the club this year, as well as Danah Ansari ’24 and Julia Nephew ’25 who attended every service shift this year.

The GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. They distribute over 100 million pounds of nutritious food to people who struggle to have enough to eat in Eastern Massachusetts.
