Fall Music Concert Showcases Winsor Ensembles
The annual Fall Music Concert on Friday, October 8 was held in the David E. and Stacey L. Goel Theater during all-school assembly. Barely a month into the school year, over 100 students from across 7 performing arts courses participated in the concert: Lower School Orchestra, Lower School Chorus I/II, Lower School Descants, Upper School Chamber Players, Upper School Illumina, and Illumina Small, supported by Upper School Tech Theater and Class IV Stagecraft.
The 26-person Lower School Orchestra performed both “Pink Panther,” a jazz piece written by Henry Mancini, and the 1830s dancehall favorite “Can Can,” arranged by Richard Meyer.
Next the Lower School Chamber Players performed two movements from Trio Sonata in C Major, Opus 2, No. 3 by Arcangelo Corelli. More than a showcase for student musicians, the concert is also an educational experience for the audience, who were told to listen to the instruments blending together to create one soundscape in the first movement, followed by a faster Allemanda dance in the second movement, where the instruments trade melodies back and forth. Theater etiquette is also part of audience education with reminders to hold applause despite the brief pause in between movements.
Composed of students in Class I and Class II, Chorus I/II performed “Vuela” by Carlos Cordero, a celebratory song that reminds us to lean into our community, our friendships, and to be kind to ourselves as we push to new heights.
Descants, composed of students in Class III and Class IV, sang “Sleep, Little Child, Sleep” by German composer Johannes Brahms. For the piece, students were divided into sections and each section carried the melody before singing it as a round.
Illumina, Winsor’s Upper School choral ensemble, performed three works: “The Nightingale,” written by Thomas Weelkes, who was a contemporary of William Shakespeare; “Sure on this Shining Night,” composed by Samuel Barberthe; and finally, a new Disney medley. A fan-favorite, students, faculty, and staff alike look forward to Choral Director Andrew Marshall’s yearly compilation. “Disney Medley 6” included music from feature films such as Brave, Aladdin, and Frozen 2.
Singing a capella, Illumina Small concluded the program with a rendition of pop ballad “Human Nature” by Steve Porcaro and John Bettis, arranged by Mr. Marshall.
In addition to the two instrumental classes and the three choral classes who performed on stage, Upper School Tech Theater and Class IV Stagecraft ran the back of the house, moving risers, dimming lights, managing microphones, and maneuvering instruments and music stands.
Congratulations to all of the performers, students, and faculty who participated in the annual Fall Music Concert and shared a beautiful morning of music with the Winsor community.
