Saturday, May 13โOn the strength of wins in 10 of 17 events, the Winsor varsity track and field team captured the Eastern Independent League (EIL) title, amassing 163 points to 147.5 for runner-up Concord Academy. It was the seventh consecutive conference championship for the track team.
The jumpers got Winsor off to a great start: Lydia Morris-Kliment โ23 won long jump gold on her first attempt, with a 16-9.25 mark; Erika Ruiz โ25 finished fifth (14-5.5). Jemma Kuriyel โ25 was co-champion in high-jump (4-6 PB), a wonderful early surprise. Yemisi Adetowubo โ26 won a close triple jump contest, topping the field with a personal best jump of 31-9.
In javelin, all three throwers scored: Helena Nguyen โ23 was fourth (72-5), Caroline Shin โ23 was fifth (70-1) and Lara do Rosario โ26 had a huge personal best on her final throw (69-9), which was good for sixth.
Once the track events began, Winsor continued its run of victories and stellar results.
The 4x100m team of Maddie Cheng โ25, Adetowubo, Natalie Cooper โ24 and Morris-Kliment got the baton around in a season-best 52.38 seconds to start the slate of running events. Gabrielle Peskin โ28 had a fantastic runner-up showing in the 1500m in a time of 5:15.00, followed by Adetowuboโs runner-up finish in the 100m hurdles (17.56 PB).
Winsorโs runners posted personal best times in the 400m, with Cheng edging out a narrow win in 1:02.61; do Rosario was bronze medalist in 1:04.65. Morris-Kliment reset the school and EIL meet records in the 100m, clocking 12.59 seconds.
Over in the discus circle, Morris-Kliment won yet again, with a throw of 108-4. She remains undefeated in the event over the past two-plus seasons. Anita Rodriguez โ25 was fifth in discus (66-5 personal best).
In the 800m, both Emily Zhang โ25 and Nguyen had fantastic personal best efforts, finishing second and third in 2:33.93 and 2:35.54, respectively.
Desiree Winston-Johnson โ24 was gold medalist in 300m hurdles in a time of 52.76, with Adetowubo sixth in the race (56.24). Cheng got another win in the 200, at 27.23 seconds.
The 3000m crew got critical points that helped Winsor put its point total safely out of reach for ConcordโSerena Toscani โ25 was second in 11:59.65, Gracie Zhou โ26 was third in 12:17.43, and Caitlin Wang โ25 was fifth in 13:38.63.
The culminating race was the 4x400m, and the team of Winston-Johnson, Nguyen, do Rosario and Cheng showed tremendous grit in a tight race. They capped a day of wins by holding off Pingree in a time of 4:25.41.
