Annual Dance Concert Assembly

April 6, 2023—“Eighth graders and Upper School students, if you can see yourself up here, then audition!” said Performing Arts Faculty Carey McKinley, who teaches dance and also coaches volleyball and tennis. Ms. McKinley highlighted the upcoming spring auditions for the Winsor Dance Team, Illumina, Advanced Rock On, and a new “Master Class” course that will be offered for advanced musicians.

The annual Winsor Dance Concert took place during all-school Assembly. It was truly a student-led endeavor. Choreography was provided by the Winsor Dance Team for six of the eight acts. Meanwhile, students in the Upper School Technical Theater class were responsible for all aspects of stage management, board operation, stage crew, and even lighting design, which was provided by senior Jeremiah Hickman-Maynard '23.

Choreographers, many from the Winsor Dance Team, are listed in show order:
  • Saratu Waya '26 choreographed a k-pop dance with five dancers to "Deep" by HYO and a track by LE SSERAFIM.
  • Amanie Yusef '25 choreographed a contemporary solo to Rihanna's "Love on the Brain."
  • Zora Chirunga '26 choreographed a contemporary duet with Saratu Waya ’26 to a BTS instrumental, "Black Swan."
  • Kendal Pauyo '26 choreographed a jazz trio to Beyonce's "Alien Superstar."
  • Performing Arts Faculty Carey McKinley along with the dancers choreographed to Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River."
  • Lily Tucker '26 choreographed a solo to a Childish Gambino track.
  • New Performing Arts Block Dance Faculty Jean Appolon choreographed to a track by music producer, Euggy.
  • Amanie Yusef '25, Lily Tucker '26 & Susan Zuo '26 choreographed the hip hop set to tracks by DaBaby, Vedo, Justine Skye, Stefflon Don, and DJ Khaled.

Dancers chose their own outfits following a black-and-white theme with pops of color.
For the final act, performers came out dressed in all black while vivid lighting created a silhouette effect that emphasized their movements. As the music cut to different songs and styles, the whole performing ensemble came out to dance and take their bows. A high-energy Assembly is just what the school needed on this rainy, foggy, spring day.

Congratulations to all the performers!
