Winsor Sailing Wins the Mass Bay Championship for the Second Year in a Row

May 22–23, 2024—Congratulations to the Winsor varsity sailing team on winning the Mass Bay C Division League Championship, which was held at Community Boating on the Charles River. The sailing team had another magnificent season, finishing number one in their division of the Massachusetts Bay League for the second year in a row.

The 2024 first place finish was led by captains Deedee Ansari ’24, Kimberly Nguyen ’25, and Julia Nephew ’25. With the help of dynamic duo of Morgan Sanborn ’27 and Alexis Sanborn ’27 the team rose to the top of a very competitive division. Between this group, the team had many first place finishes in a very packed race schedule. Many of the teams in the division were highly competitive and had top sailors including from Buckingham Browne & Nichols and the combined Beaver Country Day and Newton Country Day team. Sailing is a coed sport and Winsor is the only all-female team in the division.

“The entire team needs to be acknowledged for their hard work and dedication for making this season so successful,” said Coach Carol Hesson at the 2023–24 Spring Athletic Banquet. The team has demonstrated a significant depth of talent having placed second in their division in 2022, first in 2023, and first again in 2024.

The sailing team practiced in all conditions this season, including with surprise 40-mph winds that kicked up and capsized all of their boats. The Massachusetts Bay League teams race in 420 sailboats, a boat that is raced in both high school and collegiate sailing. The Winsor sailing team is a training ground for competitive sailors and Winsor alums have gone on to sailing programs at Brown University and the University of Pennsylvania, among others.
