AsIAm Affinity Group Ushers in Lunar New Year

January 27, 2022—The Winsor School’s AsIAm affinity group hosted a festive weekly Assembly this Thursday to celebrate Lunar New Year.

Beginning with a colorful lion dance entrance, Upper School students presented the many similar, yet contrasting, ways countries around the world celebrate this time-honored tradition. Presentations on various countries included China, Korea, Vietnam as well as notes from various celebrations in cities throughout the United States—Chicago, New York, Boston, and San Francisco. A game of Kahoot! tested everyone's knowledge of Lunar New Year, where the top finishers received tiger plushies for the Year of the Tiger.

Lower School students brought the audiences to their feet with K-pop choreographed dances before walking through the story of the 12 zodiac animals and their meaning for different years. The Assembly ended with a clothing fashion show of attire from various countries.

The celebration continued during lunch with an Asian-inspired menu from Chef Heather Pierce as well as games and crafts outside of the dining hall. Students tried their hand at water calligraphy, origami folding, as well as dumpling, mooncake, and mochi making, among other fun activities.
