Winsor Welcomes New Counselors

February 1, 2021—Two part-time counselors joined the Wellness department at The Winsor School this week.

Emily Monteiro (left) didn’t always plan to be a counselor. “My family wanted me to pursue a degree in law,” she shared. Instead, she skipped law school to gain more experience and started working in a school setting. Because of those experiences, she ultimately chose to pursue a graduate degree in social work.

Maia Monteagudo ’06 (right) is a Winsor alumna. “I’ve always been interested in listening to people’s stories” she shared. “My work in the field is to ensure that these stories are heard and validated.” As a student, Ms. Monteagudo’s favorite Winsor event was Under the Lights. “The atmosphere, the celebration, it was always electric,” she said. “I played field hockey in Upper School and my sister was on the varsity crew team. We loved the support of our Winsor community during Under the Lights.”

When asked about their go-to method for dealing with anxiety, both women mentioned movement. “Working out really helps me to stay focused on what is in front of me and not what has happened or is coming,” shared Ms. Monteiro. Ms. Monteagudo is an avid walker and impromptu dancer. “You’ll know I’m stressed when I have my headphones on and [I’m] dancing like nobody's watching.” Students should “watch out because…I love having dance partners.”

Ms. Monteiro added, “When I feel very anxious or overwhelmed, instead of letting things pile up or live in my head, I write it all down—move things around so it fits and works for me.”

Please give a warm Winsor welcome to our new community members. Find their offices by the Wellness Room.
